Day Wise Detail Itinerary
Pick- up from Bagdogra Airport/NJP to be taken to Darjeeling (7100 Ft), the "Queen of the hill stations". Darjeeling derives its name from "Dorje-Line" which means the place of "Dorje", the mystic thunderbolt. Covering a distance of 88 kms over a drive of 3.5 hrs along winding roads, its an experience of unforgettable beauty. Checkin at hotel.
Start the day at 4am with an early morning trip to Tiger Hill (7800 Ft) to catch the sunrise from behind the majestic Kunchenjunga range. On the way back visit the Ghoom Monastery & Batasia Loop. Back to the hotel for breakfast . After Breakfast, proceed for a half day sightseeing of the Himalayan Mountaineering Institute, Zoo, Tenzing Rock, Labong Race Course, Japanese Temple, Ava Art Gallery, Tea Garden (Outer view) & Tibetan Refugees Self Help Centre.. Back to the Hotel by evening. Take a walk to â€œChowrastaâ€ the centre point of the Mall area. Do some window shopping. Night Halt at Darjeeling.
This day, you would be taken for a joyride on the famed â€œDarjeeling Toy Trainâ€. Then take a trip to â€œMirikâ€ (6000 Ft) â€“ the newest hill-station in the Darjeeling hills. Famous for its squash (the vegetable) & the picturesque lake, this quiet township is also surrounded by gardens which produce some of the finest teas. The lake offers boating and fishing apart from a view of snowcapped peaks. Enjoy the fulfilling experience of Nature in its purest form mingled with the unique culture prevalent here. Spend the rest of the day at Mirik to reach Darjeeling back by sunset. Night Halt at Darjeeling.
Have breakfast, head straight to Kalimpong, also called the garden of flowers, Kalimpong has almost everything- scenic beauty, flowers, greenery, waters, mists, clouds etc. Set off for local sightseeing of Durpin Hill (which has the famous Zong Dog Palri Fo- Brang Monastery which belongs to the same Buddhist sect as the present Dalai Lama) , Jelapla View Point, Pine View Point, Chitra Bhanu & Kalim Temple, Dr Graham's Homes complex with its historic church & well maintained grounds founded in 1900 by Rev. Dr. J A Graham, a Scottish missionary, Delo Hill (5556 ft) appears to be the roof- of- the- world, is the highest point in Kalimpong. Delo also has the townâ€™s picturesque water reservoir. Then on to Mangal Dham Temple constructed in memory of the late Guru Shree (108) Mangal Dasji and dedicated to Lord Krishna, Kalimpong Arts & Crafts Centre, Nature Interpretation Centre (Forest Museum). Evening at leisure with a visit to the market.where you do some curio shopping, buy some Kalimpong Cheese & lollypops of Swiss technology from â€œLarksâ€ or just take a walk thru the market . If you are in Kalimpong on a Wednesday/Saturday, walk down to the â€œHaat Bazaarâ€ or local market â€“ a place where villagers from all nearby villages come & sell/display their wares (right from handicrafts to food items). The market starts early morning by 6-7am & is on till 4pm. This is a unique extravaganza typical to rural regions, a cultural experience you will never forget Overnight at Kalimpong.
After Breakfast, start for your next destination Gangtok. Enroute enjoy the land of the Pristine and unspoilt natural beauty â€“ Sikkim. Check in at Gangtok (5500 Ft) hotel. Relax and enjoy the stay.
After breakfast proceed to Tsongmo Lake (12,210 Ft), a 40 km drive which takes about 2.5 hrs. This lake is located very close to Nathula Pass which is the entry point to China & remains frozen for most part of the year. Relax and relish the surroundings, majestic snowy peaks which feed the lake and the clean fresh air. Thereafter, visit Baba Mandir (new), a memorial in the name of Baba Harbhajan Singh. Back to Gangtok . Rest of the day is free for leisure. Overnight at Gangtok
After Breakfast, set off for a 10-point local sightseeing of Gangtok covering Tashi View, Ganesh Tok, Hanumak Tok, Rumtek Monastery, Shanti View Point, Do-Drul Chorten, Research Institute of Tibetology, Directorate of Handicraft & Handloom, Banjhakri falls and Flower Show. The Do-Drul Chorten (Stupa) is one of the most important stupas of Sikkim and is built by the head of the Nyingma order- Trullshi Rimpoche in 1945. It contains rare details of Dorji Phupa, Holy Books, Mantras and is encircled by 108 prayer wheels ; The Namgyal Institute of Tibetology built in 1958 in traditional style, a renowned worldwide centre for the study of the Mahayana Buddhist philosophy & religion, a treasure house of rare â€œThankasâ€, statues, over 200 Buddhist icons and prized objects of art. In the evening, relax & refresh yourself & explore the city. Overnight at Gangtok.
After Breakfast at the Gangtok hotel, set off to your next destination â€“ Lachen. On the way stop for sightseeing spots like Tashi View Point, Kabi Lungtsok, Naga Waterfall and The Confluence of Lachen Chu & Lachung Chu at Chungthang. Lunch will be served at Namok . The whole journey takes about 6-7 hours drive. By evening you reach at Lachen and your trip for the first day ends. Check in at a hotel/Lodge. Overnight at Lachen.
After breakfast leave for Thangu & Chopta Valley. Thangu valley occupies a very broad valley at the junction of Thangu Chu, Chopta Chu, & Lassur Chu. It is situated at an altitude of 14000ft. Both the valley erupts riots of colours in the month of June & July. Also in the month of Dec & Jan you can play in the snow or even walk across the meandering frozen Chopta rivers. If weather permits and permission is availed, leave for Gurudongmar Lake(17,200 ft). After spending half and hour to one hour there, drive back to Lachen. After lunch, visit the Lachen Monastery and start your journey to Lachung . Night halt at Lachung.
After breakfast leave for Yumthang (11,800 ft.). Pass through the Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary, which is home to the endemic Rhododendron niveum, the State Tree.On the way you may visit the famous hot spring. Yumthang is a large valley surrounded by mountains where the tree line ends. In April / May / June the valley erupts in a riot of colours as Rhododendrons, Primulae and many other Alpine Flowers are in full bloom. In the winter months, Yumthang is somber with snow all around, and the snow clad mountains adding to the ethereal beauty. Return to Lachung for lunch. After lunch, set off for Gangtok. Overnight at Gangtok.
